TOKYO -- Just two days after a
 major typhoon tore through 
Japan's Osaka area, disrupting 
business and travel on a large 
scale, a powerful earthquake
 dealt destruction on the northern
 main island of Hokkaido 
on Thursday morning, leaving 
millions of households without electricity and forcing the 
closure of airports and rail services.
